Who should take the class?:

Anyone who wants instruction on how to classically draw (or paint) the human figure.  The class is set up for students who want to devote time in 2026 to significantly improve their skills and to be able to execute figure drawings with much more confidence.

What to expect during the class ….

1. Instruction and demo  Classical figure drawing terms, concepts and approach.   Instructor demonstration of the four key steps to drawing the figure that demonstrates the four-step drawing method

2. Practice the concepts •  Students will practice and draw from a live model, thereby putting into practice the class concepts.  Instructor will provide individual critique and guidance.

3. Individual guidance and critique (two 30 minute 1-on-1 sessions via GoogleMeet)

We will continue to refine our drawing with that same pose for three months.  The student can then work on the drawing independently between the monthly classes.

NOTE: Every three months we will switch "the pose" and begin a new drawing (or painting).

For artists who are still working to master their figure drawing, recommend that they use the graphite materials below, however people can bring their medium of choice (paint, pastel, etc.)

3 pencils. Pencils with 3 lead softness.

  • 1 – hard lead. “4H”, “2H”, or “H”

  • 1 – medium softness (HB or B)

  • 1 – soft (4B or 8B)

Kneaded Eraser

Paper.   Recommend larger 24x18 paper. (Strathmore, Canson drawing paper). Newsprint quality is paper is perfectly fine. (Minimum size 11 x 14.)

Easel (strongly recommended but optional).  Here is a brand I recommend.  Its portable, able to support large and small canvases, and easy to setup and stow away.   https://www.dickblick.com/items/testrite-aluminum-easel/
